Overview

The HMD Luma is a budget phone from HMD, with an unverified reference price of about JOD 75 (about $105) — an estimate, not a confirmed market price. Below is its full spec sheet with a plain-language breakdown, pros and cons, and how it compares to its rivals. We have not tested this phone ourselves; everything here is derived from published specifications.

Its main highlights: its large 5,000 mAh battery. Its chipset is basic (18/100) — calls, WhatsApp and light browsing, as a first or backup phone.

Performance-index rank: #14 of 20 HMD phones we list.

Why consider it?

A 120 Hz screen, a headphone jack and a dedicated microSD slot good for 1 TB, at ≈ 75 — with no 5G at all.

Who it suits

A student's first phone, or a simple house handset for calls, messages and video, used with wired earphones.

Who should look elsewhere

Gamers, anyone who spends the day outdoors in bright sun, or a buyer who needs the phone to live on 5G networks.

Performance, camera, display and battery — and the limits of the evidence

The Luma is the cheap end of HMD's range, and it reads honestly once you separate the shape of the spec sheet from what it means. The 120 Hz refresh rate is real and is printed on HMD's own page, and it does beat every same-price alternative we list. But it is 120 Hz on a 720 x 1604 panel that peaks at 500 nits: scrolling will look smoother, while reading outdoors at midday will be harder than on phones with twice the brightness.

The chip is a Unisoc T615 with 4 GB of RAM on Android 15, with 128 or 256 GB of storage. One practical detail earns real credit here: HMD lists the tray as "Nano sim + Nano sim + MicroSD", a dedicated card slot taking up to 1 TB. You never have to give up the second SIM to expand storage, which is more than many pricier phones manage.

The line to be clear about before buying is connectivity. HMD's table says 2G, 3G and 4G. There is no 5G. At this price that is a defensible choice, but it is also the thing that decides how long the phone stays useful to you.

The rest: one 50 MP rear camera with an LED flash, an 8 MP selfie camera, 18 W charging into a 5,000 mAh battery, and a 197.9 g body. There is a 3.5 mm jack, a pair of speakers and an FM receiver. As we have not handled the phone, neither image quality nor how it copes with heavier apps is something we can report.

Alternatives worth comparing

  • ZTE Blade A56 — Same price (75), and one we've actually seen quoted rather than estimated. Its Unisoc T7200 is newer than the T615, but the camera drops to 13 MP from 50 and the screen to 90 Hz from 120. (75 JOD · observed) full comparison ›
  • Tecno Camon 20 — The same money (≈ 75) gets a Helio G85 and a 64 MP camera with a second sensor, but only a 60 Hz screen — you swap scrolling smoothness for a stronger chip and camera on paper. (75 JOD · estimate)

Verdict — conditional on your needs and the documented price above

If the job is a first phone or a quiet household handset — calls, messages, video — and smooth scrolling plus a headphone jack matter more to you than raw speed, the Luma delivers that at ≈ 75, with a card slot that genuinely solves storage. But it is a 4G device on a T615 with a 500-nit panel, so don't plan five years around it — and we haven't tested it, so day-to-day responsiveness and photo quality aren't ours to judge.

What does that mean in plain words?

Chipset: Unisoc T615 — basic tier (18/100): calls, WhatsApp and light browsing.
Battery: 5,000 mAh — a large capacity by market standards. Capacity is an indicator, not a measurement: real endurance depends on the display, chipset and your usage, and we have not measured it.
Charging: 18W — standard (rated charging power; actual charge time varies with the charger and temperature).
Display: IPS LCD HD+, 6.67-inch — an LCD panel; lower contrast than OLED, and the norm at this price.
Camera: 50 MP (1 lens) plus a 8 MP front camera. Megapixels and lens count describe the setup, not image quality — real results depend on the sensor and processing, which we have not tested.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • 120 Hz at this price — higher than every alternative we list at the same money.
  • A 3.5 mm jack, two speakers and an FM radio, all of which vanish from phones costing more.
  • A third, separate card slot (two nano-SIMs plus microSD to 1 TB) on top of 128 or 256 GB internal.

Cons

  • HMD lists 2G, 3G and 4G only — there is no 5G on this phone.
  • 500 nits peak brightness, which is low for reading in direct sunlight.
  • The Unisoc T615 with 4 GB of RAM is the weakest chip among the phones we set against it here.
