Overview
The Mi 8 Explorer Edition is a budget phone from Xiaomi, with an unverified reference price of about JOD 75 (about $105) — an estimate, not a confirmed market price. Below is its full spec sheet with a plain-language breakdown, pros and cons, and how it compares to its rivals. We have not tested this phone ourselves; everything here is derived from published specifications.
Its main highlights: its vivid OLED display. Its chipset is entry-level (46/100) — for messaging, browsing and video; heavy gaming is not its territory.
Performance-index rank: #144 of 354 Xiaomi phones we list — and its performance-per-dinar is among the highest we list (an arithmetic ratio, not a verdict on value).
Why consider it?
The Mi 8 Explorer Edition is the transparent-backed Mi 8 from June 2018, and Xiaomi's own table reserves three things for it that the standard Mi 8 never got: the see-through glass back, a pressure-sensitive in-display fingerprint reader and 3D structured-light face unlock, on top of 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. At ≈ 75, those three items are the whole argument for picking it over a plain Mi 8 — nearly everything else is shared.
Who it suits
Suited to someone who wants a phone that looks like nothing else, with an AMOLED panel and a real telephoto lens, who enjoys details like dual-frequency positioning and is not put off by a China-market release.
Who should look elsewhere
Not for anyone who needs a battery that survives a long day, who wants a headphone jack or a memory-card slot, or who is counting on documented carrier services outside China.
Performance, camera, display and battery — and the limits of the evidence
Xiaomi's Chinese spec table splits the two models column by column: both run a Snapdragon 845 at 2.8GHz with Adreno 630 graphics at 710MHz, but this edition ships with 8GB of LPDDR4x and 128GB of UFS storage, and a 3000mAh battery (2900mAh minimum) where the standard Mi 8 gets 3400mAh — the transparent back cost real capacity. The display is a 6.21-inch Samsung AMOLED at 2248x1080 and 402 ppi, quoted at 600 nits in high-brightness mode and 430 nits typical, with a 60000:1 contrast ratio, DCI-P3 coverage, always-on display and HDR support. The rear pair is two 12MP cameras: a wide f/1.8 with four-axis optical stabilisation and dual-PD autofocus, plus an f/2.4 telephoto, with a 20MP camera in front. On charging, the handset supports the QC 4.0+ protocol while the charger in the box is an 18W QC 3.0 unit, and no maximum wattage is published for the phone itself. A footnote on Xiaomi's English page is worth repeating: the components visible behind the glass are not necessarily a one-to-one representation of the actual hardware, so treat the back as styling rather than an engineering window. Xiaomi called it the first phone with dual-frequency L1+L5 positioning; it weighs 177g at 7.6mm and carries Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX HD. There is no headphone jack and no microSD slot — wired audio runs through a bundled Type-C adapter — and the Chinese sheet limits VoLTE to a single Chinese operator as published.
Alternatives worth comparing
- Galaxy M33 5G — Cheaper by ≈ 3 at ≈ 72; a 6000mAh battery, a 6.6-inch 120Hz screen, 5G and a phone four years newer, against an Exynos 1280 that sits below the Snapdragon 845 in our spec index. (72 JOD · estimate)

Verdict — conditional on your needs and the documented price above
Worth it if the transparent back, the pressure-sensitive in-screen fingerprint reader and 3D face unlock are exactly what you are paying for, and a 2018 China-market handset does not trouble you. If your days run long away from a charger, the battery is the hard limit: 3000mAh is the smallest figure in the Mi 8 family, and that is the factory number, not the number a seven-year-old cell delivers.

What does that mean in plain words?
Battery: 3,000 mAh — a relatively small capacity by market standards. Capacity is an indicator, not a measurement: real endurance depends on the display, chipset and your usage, and we have not measured it.
Charging: 18W — standard (rated charging power; actual charge time varies with the charger and temperature).
Display: AMOLED FHD+, 6.21-inch — an OLED panel (true blacks, higher contrast than LCD).
Camera: 12+12 MP (2 lenses) plus a 20 MP front camera. Megapixels and lens count describe the setup, not image quality — real results depend on the sensor and processing, which we have not tested.
Pros & cons
Pros
- 6.21-inch Samsung AMOLED at 2248x1080 and 402 ppi, quoted at 600 nits in high-brightness mode with DCI-P3 coverage and HDR support
- Twin 12MP rear cameras: an f/1.8 wide with four-axis optical stabilisation and an f/2.4 telephoto, plus a 20MP front camera
- 8GB of LPDDR4x with 128GB of UFS storage, and dual-frequency L1+L5 positioning that Xiaomi billed as a first
Cons
- Only 3000mAh (2900mAh minimum), less than the standard Mi 8's 3400mAh, with an 18W charger in the box
- No 3.5mm jack and no memory-card slot; wired headphones depend on the bundled Type-C adapter
- A China-market release: its official sheet limits VoLTE to one Chinese operator, and it never got a standalone global product page
