Figures as published (August 3, 2026). Prices written in the article text are our catalog's figures when it was written, and prices move — each phone's current price and its status (observed with a date, or an estimate) are on its page and in the “Phones mentioned” cards below, and any device or brand count above belongs to that date.
For a long time an AMOLED screen signalled an expensive phone. That era is over. Our database holds 1,481 devices with an OLED or AMOLED panel, spread across every tier: Samsung 223 devices, Xiaomi 193, vivo 179, Oppo 147, Honor 99, Huawei 94, realme 88, Motorola 73. The screen technology is now a line item you find at JOD 20 and at far higher prices alike, and the difference between them is not the panel type on its own.
The real difference between OLED and LCD
An LCD has a backlight layer running behind the entire image, so black always comes out as dark grey because light leaks through. On an OLED, every pixel emits its own light, and black means the pixel is switched off completely. The result is true black and far higher contrast, and it is the first thing you notice when you place two phones side by side in a dark room or watch video with night scenes.
The second difference is power draw: because a black pixel is off, dark mode, dark wallpapers and an always-on clock consume less battery on OLED than on an LCD whose backlight runs regardless. There are honest drawbacks you should know about: OLED panels are vulnerable to burn-in from static elements left on screen at high brightness for very long periods, and some cheap units use flicker-based dimming that bothers certain people's eyes at low brightness. Visibility in direct sunlight depends on the quality of the specific panel, not on the word AMOLED in the spec sheet.
The cheapest ways into an AMOLED screen
- Galaxy J1 Ace — JOD 20, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED at 60Hz, Exynos 3475, performance score 8, 1GB RAM and 8GB storage, 1800mAh battery with 5W charging, 5MP main and 2MP front camera, released 2015.
- Galaxy S3 Neo — JOD 20, 4.8-inch Super AMOLED at 60Hz, Snapdragon 400, performance score 8, 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, 2100mAh battery with 5W charging, 8MP camera, released 2014.
- Galaxy Grand Max — JOD 22, 5.25-inch Super AMOLED at 60Hz, Snapdragon 410, performance score 9, 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, 2500mAh battery with 5W charging, 13MP main and 5MP front camera, released 2014.
- Galaxy Note 3 Neo — JOD 22, 5.5-inch Super AMOLED at 60Hz, Exynos 5260, performance score 8, 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, 3100mAh battery with 10W charging, released 2014.
- Galaxy E5 — JOD 22, 5-inch Super AMOLED at 60Hz, Snapdragon 410, performance score 7, 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, 2400mAh battery with 5W charging, 8MP main and 5MP front camera, released 2015.
Why cheap here is not automatically a bargain
Note the pattern running through the whole list: performance scores between 7 and 9, 1GB or 2GB of RAM, 8GB or 16GB of storage, 5W charging apart from one model at 10W, every screen at 60Hz, and release years between 2014 and 2016. You are buying a genuine AMOLED panel, but it is attached to hardware a full generation behind. Modern apps either refuse to run or crawl on 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage fills up on updates alone.
The takeaway: panel type is now a poor selection criterion, because 1,481 devices in our database have it. The figures that change your daily experience are the performance score, the RAM, the storage and the refresh rate. The cheapest AMOLED at JOD 20 makes sense only as a backup or second-line device, nothing more. If this is your primary phone, the best use of that budget is to ignore the word AMOLED entirely and compare on performance score and RAM instead. Prices are starting prices in the local market and vary by condition and availability.
