Figures as published (July 29, 2026). Prices written in the article text are our catalog's figures when it was written, and prices move — each phone's current price and its status (observed with a date, or an estimate) are on its page and in the “Phones mentioned” cards below.
A first phone in a child's hands is not a long-term investment. It will drop more than once, it will get knocked around, it may go missing at school, and within a year or two your child will want a different one anyway. So the first question should be: how much do you lose if it is gone? Not: how many performance points does it score? That single shift turns the usual priority list upside down.
Four Phones at a Price That Will Not Hurt
All four run messaging, video and school apps without drama. The gaps between them are small, and they show up in details that matter more to you as a parent than to the child.
- Honor Play 40C — JOD 68, a 6.5-inch IPS LCD screen at HD+ and 60Hz, Snapdragon 480+ 5G, a 5200 mAh battery, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The cheapest option alongside the M14, but charging tops out at 10W and the front camera is only 5MP.
- Galaxy M14 5G — JOD 68, a 6000 mAh battery, the largest here, a 6.6-inch FHD+ screen at 90Hz, an Exynos 1330 chip, 25W charging, 4GB of RAM with 128GB of storage, a 50+2+2 rear camera and a 13MP front camera.
- Galaxy A07 — JOD 72, the newest here (2025), a 6.7-inch HD+ screen at 90Hz, a Helio G99 chip, a 5000 mAh battery and 25W charging. Note the storage: only 64GB, the smallest of the four, and the price can reach JOD 82 depending on the version.
- Honor Play 40 — JOD 72, a 5200 mAh battery, a 6.56-inch HD+ screen at 90Hz, 22.5W charging, 8GB of RAM with 128GB of storage, a 13+2 rear camera and a 5MP front camera.
The Cheapest Is Sometimes the Smartest Call
On our performance index the spread across these phones is five points at most: 45 for the Honor Play 40C and 45 for the Play 40, against 42 for the Galaxy M14 and 40 for the Galaxy A07. A ten-year-old playing a light game and making video calls will never feel five points. What you will feel is JOD 20 extra sunk into a phone that cracked after three months. If the choice is paying more for a slightly smoother screen or paying less and keeping the difference for a screen protector and a solid case, take the second one.
But There Is a Floor You Should Not Go Below
On the local market you will find old phones at JOD 20, such as the Galaxy J1, released in 2015 with a 4.3-inch screen, an 1850 mAh battery, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of storage, scoring 5 out of 100 on our index. That low price is not a saving, because 4GB of storage cannot hold today's apps in the first place, and a battery that size runs out before the school day ends. A phone that does not work comes back to you as expense and frustration, not as savings.
Before You Pay
Set aside part of the budget for protection rather than specs: a solid case and a screen protector extend a phone's life more than any chip difference. And if your child shoots a lot of photos or installs games, stay away from the 64GB version and take 128GB — the price gap between the A07 and the M14 is four dinars, while the storage gap is double.
The bottom line: of the four, the Galaxy M14 5G at JOD 68 is the most balanced daily choice with its 6000 mAh battery and FHD+ screen, and the Honor Play 40C at the same price makes sense if RAM and storage matter more to you than charging speed. Whatever you pick, remember you are buying a phone that will be dropped often, not one that has to win a spec comparison.
