Figures as published (August 6, 2026). Prices written in the article text are our catalog's figures when it was written, and prices move — each phone's current price and its status (observed with a date, or an estimate) are on its page and in the “Phones mentioned” cards below, and any device or brand count above belongs to that date.
First, the baseline: above JOD 601 there is no slow phone. The median performance index across all 82 devices is 92 out of 100, and the highest score we record is 100 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max at JOD 889. So when you spend an extra 400, you are not buying speed — you are buying other things, and some of them are worth it while others are not.
The Camera Is the Difference You Actually Feel
This is where the money shows. The Galaxy S26 Ultra at JOD 719 carries four rear cameras at 200+50+50+10, and the Oppo Find X9 Pro at JOD 999 carries three at 50+200+50. Meanwhile the cheapest entry in the tier, the Nubia RedMagic 11 Pro at JOD 609, has 50+50+2 — and a 2-megapixel sensor is not a zoom lens, it is a helper sensor. That means you can spend over 600 and still have no optical reach at all. If the camera is your reason for buying, count the real sensors rather than reading the price. Cheaper options exist too: the Honor Magic 7 Pro at JOD 699 has 200+50+50, though it is a 2025 model rather than a current one.
Screen, Chip and Memory
On the display the gap is smaller than you would expect. The OnePlus 15 at JOD 650 has an LTPO AMOLED 1.5K panel at 165Hz, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra at JOD 719 has an AMOLED 2K panel at 120Hz. The difference between 1.5K and 2K on a 6.9-inch screen takes effort to spot; the difference between 165Hz and 120Hz shows up the moment you scroll. As for the chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is in the OnePlus 15 at JOD 650 and in the Xiaomi 17 Ultra at JOD 1145 — same family, and the index gap between them is zero, both at 98.
Where the Money Goes to Waste
- The Xiaomi 17 Ultra at JOD 1145 scores 98, and the OnePlus 15 at JOD 650 also scores 98. That is a 495 gap for the same performance index, while the OnePlus battery is 7300 against 6000.
- The Galaxy Z Fold 8 at JOD 1099: an 8-inch folding screen, but a 4400 battery and 25W charging — the smallest battery and the slowest charging of every phone named in this article, at close to the highest price. You are paying for the fold itself, not for the specification.
- Memory: the Honor Magic 8 Pro at JOD 949 and the Oppo Find X9 Pro at JOD 999 both ship with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. The same 16/512 comes on the OnePlus 15 at JOD 650.
- The iPhone 17 Pro Max at JOD 889 against the iPhone 17 Pro at JOD 875: 14 buys a 6.9-inch screen instead of 6.3 and a 4832 battery instead of 3988. That one is an example of a price gap that genuinely adds up.
The last point matters most and never appears in a spec table: years of software updates. At this price you should expect to keep the phone four or five years, update policies vary enormously between manufacturers, and no number in the specification list tells you which is which. Before paying above JOD 900, check the manufacturer's published update commitment — a JOD 650 phone supported for five years ends up cheaper than a JOD 1100 phone abandoned after two. And broadly: if you will not use a telephoto lens, the JOD 600 to 750 band gives you 98 percent of the experience.
