A three-year-old flagship or a new midranger? The answer in numbers

The flagship that cost a fortune in 2022 now starts at JOD 235, while a new midranger starts at JOD 145. That is a JOD 90 gap — what does it buy you, and what does it cost you?

This is the question that comes up most often for anyone shopping on a tight budget in the local market: a flagship chip that is three years old, or a brand-new phone off the shelf with midrange specs? Prices have converged enough that the question is no longer theoretical. We lined up the numbers from our own database and settled it on clear conditions rather than gut feeling.

The numbers on the table

Late-2022 flagships, all on the Snapdragon 8 Gen2 with a performance score of 82 out of 100: - Nubia Z50 — JOD 235 · 5000 mAh battery with 80W charging · 6.67-inch AMOLED FHD+ at 144Hz · 8GB/256GB · 64+50 cameras and a 16MP selfie - Redmi K60 Pro — JOD 239 · 5000 mAh battery with 120W charging · 6.67-inch AMOLED 2K at 120Hz · 12GB/256GB+ · 50+8+2 cameras and a 16MP selfie - Vivo iQOO 11 — JOD 285 · 5000 mAh battery with 120W charging · 6.78-inch AMOLED 2K at 144Hz · 12GB/256GB · 50+13+8 cameras and a 16MP selfie

And on the other side, new midrangers released in 2025: - Poco M7 Plus 5G — JOD 145 · performance score 50 · Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 · 7000 mAh battery with 33W charging · 6.9-inch AMOLED FHD+ at 144Hz · 8GB/256GB · 20MP selfie - Vivo T4x 5G — JOD 149 · performance score 54 · Dimensity 7300 · 6500 mAh battery with 44W charging · 6.72-inch IPS LCD FHD+ at 120Hz · 6GB/128GB - Galaxy A26 5G — JOD 140 · performance score 48 · Exynos 1380 · 5000 mAh battery with 25W charging · 6.7-inch Super AMOLED at 120Hz · 6GB/128GB+

The old phone wins on speed, the new one wins on age

On performance the contest is decided and it is not close: 82 against 54 for the strongest midranger in the list (Vivo T4x 5G), a gap of 28 points on our performance index. You feel that gap in heavy games, in multitasking and in photo processing. Add two things you simply will not find in the JOD 150 bracket: 120W charging instead of 33W or 25W, and an AMOLED 2K panel instead of FHD+ or IPS LCD.

But a phone is not only numbers. A device released at the end of 2022 is now more than three and a half years old, and the 5000 mAh written on the spec sheet is not what you get after that many charge cycles. The Poco M7 Plus 5G, by contrast, arrives with a fresh 7000 mAh cell — 2000 mAh more, and at the start of its life. Two further points favour the newer phone: a 2025 device is at the beginning of its update cycle while a 2022 device is near the end of its own, and warranty coverage and spare parts in the local market are far easier for a model still on sale.

The decision, on clear conditions

  • Do you play demanding games or run photo and design apps? Take the older flagship. Nothing in this bracket makes up a 28-point gap, and the extra JOD 90 is well spent.
  • Is your day messaging, social apps, maps and ordinary photos? Take the new midranger and keep the JOD 90. The extra performance will sit unused in your pocket.
  • Is battery life your top priority, with at most one charge a day? The new phone is the clearer pick, especially the Poco M7 Plus 5G at 7000 mAh and the Vivo T4x 5G at 6500 mAh.
  • Planning to keep the phone for the next three or four years? Start from a new device. The old flagship reaches you having already spent half its life.

Two things to check before you pay. The prices quoted are starting prices for the cheapest RAM and storage version, and some models climb well above that in larger configurations — the Vivo iQOO 11 goes from JOD 285 to JOD 345, and the Galaxy A26 5G from JOD 140 to JOD 170. The second point: any used or long-stored 2022 device needs its battery and screen condition inspected before purchase, because that is where the real loss happens, not on the spec sheet.
