Overview

The iPhone XS Max is a lower mid-range phone from Apple, with an unverified reference price of about JOD 139 (about $195) — an estimate, not a confirmed market price. Below is its full spec sheet with a plain-language breakdown, pros and cons, and how it compares to its rivals. We have not tested this phone ourselves; everything here is derived from published specifications.

Its main highlights: its vivid OLED display. Its chipset is entry-level (45/100) — for messaging, browsing and video; heavy gaming is not its territory.

Performance-index rank: #34 of 46 Apple phones we list.

Why consider it?

This is the largest OLED panel Apple money buys at this level - 6.5 inches at 2688 by 1242 and 458 ppi - at an estimated ≈ 139 JOD with us. The trade is that its software road ended at iOS 18, and Apple now classes it as a vintage product.

Who it suits

Someone who wants the biggest, sharpest screen available for the smallest outlay, and is buying for limited-horizon use rather than for years ahead.

Who should look elsewhere

Anyone planning to keep the phone long term, or relying on new OS releases or on service through Apple's own channels.

Performance, camera, display and battery — and the limits of the evidence

There is one clear reason to buy an iPhone XS Max in 2026, and it is the screen. Apple lists a 6.5-inch Super Retina HD OLED at 2688 by 1242, 458 ppi, with HDR, a 1,000,000:1 typical contrast ratio and 625 cd/m2 typical brightness. Nothing at this price offers that combination of size and density. Behind it sits an A12 Bionic, two 12MP cameras - Wide plus a 2x optical telephoto - with dual optical stabilisation, 4K video to 60 fps, an IP68 rating to two metres for half an hour, and dual SIM with one eSIM.

The problem is the calendar, not the hardware. Apple does not list this model among iOS 26 or iOS 27 devices; its last major release is iOS 18, meaning it stopped receiving new operating systems while Apple has since moved two versions ahead. Heavier still, it sits on Apple's worldwide vintage list, which Apple defines as products it stopped distributing more than five and less than seven years ago, and Apple's own page says service and parts at that stage are subject to parts availability.

The remaining gaps are of their time: a 7MP front camera capped at 1080p, no Night mode on the sheet, LTE networks only with no 5G, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi rather than Wi-Fi 6. As for the battery, Apple never published a capacity; it advertised up to 15 hours of video playback for a unit that was new in 2018. Eight years on, the only number worth asking for is the Battery Health percentage in Settings, and we have inspected no unit.

Alternatives worth comparing

  • Honor 400 Lite — At JOD 160 (observed), it is JOD 21 more expensive. Compare the variants before deciding: 256GB versus 64GB+ storage, 5,230 versus 3,174 mAh, and Dimensity 7025 Ultra versus Apple A12 Bionic. These are specification differences, not measured performance or battery life. (160 JOD · observed)
  • Infinix Note 50 — For the same outlay (≈ 139 JOD): a 6.78-inch 144Hz panel, a 5200 mAh battery and a Helio G99 Ultimate. It lands close to the XS Max on our spec index, but it is a new phone rather than a used one. (139 JOD · estimate)

Verdict — conditional on your needs and the documented price above

It makes sense at ≈ 139 JOD if your goal is the biggest sharp OLED for the least money and you know you are buying a phone that has left Apple's OS cycle. It makes no sense if you plan to keep it for years, need guaranteed official service, or need 5G. The line we will not cross: the battery in an eight-year-old unit cannot be read off any spec sheet, and we have not tested this phone or inspected its cell.

What does that mean in plain words?

Chipset: Apple A12 Bionic — entry level (45/100) for messaging, browsing and video; not aimed at heavy gaming.
Battery: 3,174 mAh — a relatively small capacity by market standards. Capacity is an indicator, not a measurement: real endurance depends on the display, chipset and your usage, and we have not measured it.
Charging: 18W — standard (rated charging power; actual charge time varies with the charger and temperature).
Display: OLED FHD+, 6.5-inch — an OLED panel (true blacks, higher contrast than LCD).
Camera: 12+12 MP (2 lenses) plus a 7 MP front camera. Megapixels and lens count describe the setup, not image quality — real results depend on the sensor and processing, which we have not tested.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • A 6.5-inch Super Retina HD OLED at 2688 by 1242 and 458 ppi, with HDR and a 1,000,000:1 typical contrast ratio - the largest and densest panel of the four phones here.
  • Two 12MP rear cameras, Wide at f/1.8 and a 2x optical telephoto at f/2.4, with dual optical image stabilisation, 4K video up to 60 fps and stereo recording.
  • IP68 to two metres for 30 minutes, an A12 Bionic, and dual SIM (nano-SIM plus eSIM); Apple advertised up to 15 hours of video playback, higher than both the iPhone XS and the iPhone X.

Cons

  • Absent from Apple's iOS 26 and iOS 27 device lists; its last major operating system is iOS 18, so it left the new-OS cycle back in 2025.
  • Apple lists it as vintage worldwide - a category its own page defines as products it stopped distributing more than five and less than seven years ago, where service and parts are subject to parts availability.
  • A 7MP front camera limited to 1080p, no Night mode anywhere on the spec sheet, LTE only with no 5G, and 208 grams - the heaviest phone in this group.

Note: Unverified reference estimate (derived from launch pricing and comparable phones) — a starting point for negotiation, not a confirmed price. Specs come from official manufacturer announcements and the locally available variant may differ slightly; the indices are computed from specs and we have not tested the phone ourselves. Specification ambiguity: Some spec fields on this page (battery_mah, charge_w, ram_gb, refresh_hz) could not be matched to the manufacturer's own page — either the maker does not publish them, publishes a different figure, or the name covers more than one variant.
