Overview

The Galaxy S9 is a budget phone from Samsung, with an unverified reference price of about JOD 55 (about $80), up to about JOD 65 for higher storage — also an estimate — an estimate, not a confirmed market price. Below is its full spec sheet with a plain-language breakdown, pros and cons, and how it compares to its rivals. We have not tested this phone ourselves; everything here is derived from published specifications.

Its main highlights: its sharp, bright display, and its vivid OLED display. Its chipset is basic (36/100) — calls, WhatsApp and light browsing, as a first or backup phone.

Performance-index rank: #115 of 342 Samsung phones we list — and its performance-per-dinar is among the highest we list (an arithmetic ratio, not a verdict on value).

Why consider it?

Samsung's top-of-the-line handset for March 2018, now offered at roughly ≈ 55–≈ 65. The price is not what settles the question. Samsung's security update-scope page carries two lists, monthly and quarterly, and the oldest Galaxy S on either of them is the S21 FE 5G and the S22 generation. The S9 is on neither.

Who it suits

A second handset, a backup line, a Wi-Fi media player, or a supervised first phone for a child.

Who should look elsewhere

Not a daily line, not a phone to hold a banking app or a work account, and not for anyone who wants an official spec sheet to check a seller's claims against.

Performance, camera, display and battery — and the limits of the evidence

Samsung now keeps this model in exactly one place: the support section. The SM-G960F page on Samsung UK is live, listed there as a 64GB dual-SIM unit in the Certified Pre-Owned programme, with manuals and software downloads attached. The product page with its spec table is gone. The model's Middle East address opens the current Galaxy S family page instead, the global address opens the general Galaxy front door, and none of the other locales tried returns a table. The practical consequence is that the screen, battery and charging figures in our record no longer have a published manufacturer reference behind them, which is logged in the spec notes on this page.

The one part Samsung still documents in detail is the processor. The Exynos 9810 page on its semiconductor site lists four custom cores at 2.9GHz, four Cortex-A55 cores at 1.9GHz, a 10nm FinFET process, Mali-G72 MP18 graphics and a Cat.18 LTE modem rated at 1.2Gbps down. At the top of that same page sits a one-line banner: "This product has been discontinued." Those are the chip's published numbers, not a measurement taken from a handset.

One more line decides the rest. Samsung's update-scope page shows a monthly list and a quarterly list, and the oldest Galaxy S devices on them are the S21 FE 5G and the S22 generation, both under quarterly. The S9 appears at no tier. The "up to 7 years" policy printed at the top of that page is dated January 2024 — a full six years after this phone arrived. Buying one today means buying respectable hardware of its generation inside a body where the software clock stopped.

Alternatives worth comparing

  • Pocophone F1 — Around the same money, ≈ 55, and our record gives it a Snapdragon 845, a 4000mAh battery and a 6.18-inch screen — stronger hardware on paper. But the thing that decides whether an old phone is still usable is identical for both: no security patches from the maker. The choice here is about hardware alone. (55 JOD · estimate)
  • iPhone 7 Plus — At about ≈ 55, and the only option on this list still receiving fixes: Apple's security releases page lists iOS 15.8.8, dated 11 May 2026, for "iPhone 7 (all models)". The screen is smaller and the OS is frozen on a 2021 branch, but on the security question it is clearly ahead. (55 JOD · estimate)

Strengths and trade-offs in detail ›

Verdict — conditional on your needs and the documented price above

If what you want is a second handset or a backup line, then at around ≈ 55 this is defensible inside firm limits: no sensitive accounts, no payment apps. As a daily phone, no — and the reason is not its age but that Samsung itself has removed it from every security-update tier, and nothing an owner can do puts it back.

What does that mean in plain words?

Chipset: Exynos 9810 — basic tier (36/100): calls, WhatsApp and light browsing.
Battery: 3,000 mAh — a relatively small capacity by market standards. Capacity is an indicator, not a measurement: real endurance depends on the display, chipset and your usage, and we have not measured it.
Charging: 15W — standard (rated charging power; actual charge time varies with the charger and temperature).
Display: AMOLED 2K, 5.8-inch — above-FHD resolution; OLED means true blacks and high contrast.
Camera: 12 MP (1 lens) plus a 8 MP front camera. Megapixels and lens count describe the setup, not image quality — real results depend on the sensor and processing, which we have not tested.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Its silicon was the top of Samsung's own 2018 range, and the page is still up: four custom cores at 2.9GHz, four Cortex-A55 cores at 1.9GHz on a 10nm FinFET process, Mali-G72 MP18 graphics and a Cat.18 LTE modem
  • The model code can still be checked before money changes hands: the SM-G960F page on Samsung UK is live with manuals and software downloads, and the entry there is a 64GB dual-SIM unit under Samsung's Certified Pre-Owned programme
  • The outlay itself is the advantage: at ≈ 55–≈ 65 the phone stays in the bracket where losing or breaking it is not a disaster, which is the only bracket an unpatched handset belongs in

Cons

  • No security updates of any kind: the phone is absent from both lists on Samsung's update-scope page, and the commitment printed on that same page to extend support "by up to 7 years" is dated January 2024 — six years after this handset shipped
  • Samsung has pulled the product page: the model's Middle East address now opens the general Galaxy S page, and no locale checked (global, UK, US, India, Gulf) serves a spec table, so there is no manufacturer reference against which to judge a used unit
  • The chip is finished at source: the Exynos 9810 page carries the notice "This product has been discontinued", and Samsung publishes nothing today showing which processor a given market's unit contains — which matters when the purchase is second-hand

Note: Unverified reference estimate (derived from launch pricing and comparable phones) — a starting point for negotiation, not a confirmed price. Specs come from official manufacturer announcements and the locally available variant may differ slightly; the indices are computed from specs and we have not tested the phone ourselves. USD equivalents use the official peg.
Specification ambiguity: Some spec fields on this page (battery_mah, charge_w, chip, screen_type) could not be matched to the manufacturer's own page — either the maker does not publish them, publishes a different figure, or the name covers more than one variant. Treat them as unconfirmed. Spotted an error? Let us know.
