Overview
The iPhone 12 Pro Max is a mid-range phone from Apple, with an unverified reference price of about JOD 289 (about $410), up to about JOD 335 for higher storage — also an estimate — an estimate, not a confirmed market price. Below is its full spec sheet with a plain-language breakdown, pros and cons, and how it compares to its rivals. We have not tested this phone ourselves; everything here is derived from published specifications.
Its main highlights: its vivid OLED display. Its chipset is mid-tier (60/100 on our spec-based index) — the usual class for social media, video, photos and light games.
Performance-index rank: #26 of 46 Apple phones we list.
Why consider it?
The cheapest route into an Apple Pro camera: a triple 12MP system with a real telephoto and a 5x optical zoom range, plus a LiDAR Scanner and ProRAW capture — none of which exists on the 14 Plus or the 13 mini, despite both being newer.
Who it suits
Someone who shoots a lot and wants a telephoto lens, ProRAW files and Dolby Vision video, and does not mind a 2020 phone or a quarter of a kilo in the hand.
Who should look elsewhere
Anyone who wants a light phone, the longest possible software life — this is the oldest chip in the round — or a high-refresh display.
Performance, camera, display and battery — and the limits of the evidence
Everything the 12 Pro Max is worth sits in the word "Pro"; the rest is its age. We have not tested it, and the figures below come straight from Apple's page.
The camera is the real difference. Three 12MP lenses: an f/2.4 ultra-wide, an f/1.6 wide with sensor-shift stabilisation and an f/2.2 telephoto, giving a 5x optical zoom range that runs from 2.5x in to 2x out, with digital zoom to 12x. Apple adds a LiDAR Scanner, Apple ProRAW capture and Dolby Vision HDR recording up to 60 fps, and Night mode that extends to the 12MP f/2.2 front camera. None of that appears on the 14 Plus or the 13 mini we cover in this same round, even though both are newer phones.
The display is 6.7 inches at 2778x1284 and 458 ppi — numerically the same panel as the 14 Plus — rated 800 nits typical and 1200 nits in HDR, with no refresh rate published by Apple.
What you pay for that is age and mass. The A14 Bionic launched in 2020 and is the oldest chip in this round. Apple's newest published iOS release (26.6.2, 8 September 2026) is still available for "iPhone 11 and later", so the phone is supported today, but it is the nearest of the four to the edge when that list moves, and we will not promise a year Apple has not published. The body is 228 grams at 7.4mm.
Our catalogue records 3687mAh, 6GB of RAM and 20W; Apple publishes none of them. What is published: 20 hours of video, 12 streamed, 80 hours of audio, and 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W-or-higher adapter. It shipped in 128, 256 and 512GB, and the range we quote is estimated, not observed.
Alternatives worth comparing
- Galaxy S24 FE — At the same money (≈ 289), our catalogue lists the Galaxy S24 FE as a 2024 phone with a 6.7-inch 120Hz screen and a 50+12+8 camera set. It cannot match the optical zoom range here, but it is four years newer — which is precisely what the 12 Pro Max lacks. (289 JOD · estimate) full comparison ›
- Galaxy S22 Ultra — Also at ≈ 289, our data gives the S22 Ultra a 108+12+10+10 camera array, a listed 5000mAh battery and a 6.8-inch 120Hz screen. It attacks the 12 Pro Max exactly where it lives — wider zoom reach and a bigger cell on paper — but it is a 2022 device in its own right, so this is a choice between ecosystems rather than between new and old. Verdict — conditional on your needs and the documented price above
Take it if the camera is the reason for the purchase: a telephoto, ProRAW and LiDAR starting at ≈ 289 is not a common combination in this bracket, and no cheaper iPhone offers it. Avoid it if you intend to keep the phone for years, because a 2020 chip means buying the end of Apple's support list closest to the edge — and our ≈ 289 to ≈ 335 range is an unverified estimate.

Phones JO index (spec-based)
What does that mean in plain words?
Battery: 3,687 mAh — a relatively small capacity by market standards. Capacity is an indicator, not a measurement: real endurance depends on the display, chipset and your usage, and we have not measured it.
Charging: 20W — standard (rated charging power; actual charge time varies with the charger and temperature).
Display: OLED FHD+, 6.7-inch — an OLED panel (true blacks, higher contrast than LCD).
Camera: 12+12+12 MP (3 lenses) plus a 12 MP front camera. Megapixels and lens count describe the setup, not image quality — real results depend on the sensor and processing, which we have not tested.
Pros & cons
Pros
- A triple 12MP camera system: f/2.4 ultra-wide, f/1.6 wide with sensor-shift stabilisation and f/2.2 telephoto, giving a 5x optical zoom range (2.5x in, 2x out) and digital zoom to 12x — the only phone in this round with a telephoto lens at all.
- A LiDAR Scanner, Apple ProRAW capture and Dolby Vision HDR video recording up to 60 fps, with Night mode extending to the 12MP front camera as well.
- A 6.7-inch OLED at 2778x1284 and 458 ppi rated 800 and 1200 nits, IP68 to 6 metres and MagSafe charging up to 15W, in a range that starts at ≈ 289 and reaches ≈ 335.
Cons
- The A14 Bionic dates to 2020 and is the oldest chip here; Apple's newest published iOS release (26.6.2, 8 September 2026) still covers "iPhone 11 and later", but this model sits closest of the four to the edge of that list.
- 228 grams at 7.4mm thick — 25 grams heavier than the 14 Plus and 87 grams heavier than the 13 mini; this is not a phone you use comfortably one-handed.
- Apple publishes only 20 hours of video playback despite the size, against 26 hours for the same-sized 14 Plus, with no refresh rate published for the panel and a Lightning port.
